Journalist grumbles – Guess the year
During the research for a new edition of Subediting For Journalists I have come across these gems. Guess the year:
These quotes are from the second page of Sub-Editing: A Book Mainly For Young Journalists by F J Mansfield (of the editorial staff of The Times, lecturer and examiner in Practical Journalism at the University of London and President of the NUJ 1918-1919).
The year?
1931. The French have a phrase for this: Plus ça change (plus c'est la même chose).
(Open Libary catalogues a 4th edition of this book published in 1946. On page viii of my edition Mansfield refers to "this year 1931.")
Great Rare Books may have a copy for sale but it took so long to download the details I gave up. Try for yourself here: http://www.greatrarebooks.com/Catalgoue_Yearwise/Eng_Books_Old/Books/eng-old-books/computer-science,-information-n-general-works/News%20media,%20journalism%20&%20publishing/Sub_Editing_%20-%20F_J_Mansfield.pdf
"This book must not be taken as an inducement to young persons to enter journalism. Unhappily the field of employment is becoming more restricted owing to newspaper amalgamations ...
"... we are discovering that our calling, like industry at large, is subject to economic law. 'Rationalization' is spelling tragedy to many. It would be for the good of the public, and of the journalist, if the old competitive and independent days were restored ..."

How to make a magazine in 115 seconds
One of my international students just found this video about Little White Lies, the indy cinema magazine.
It's a brilliant two minute summary of a two month production process and well worth a look:
